Mass Comm. Department’s SDG Centre Commences Operations

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an 18-year projected plan of the United Nations General Assembly set in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro with the objective to produce a set of universal goals that meet the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. The goals are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. They are included in a UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda.
The goals, as intended by the UNGA, are geared towards ensuring No poverty (End poverty in all its forms everywhere); Zero hunger (End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture); Good health and well-being (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages); Quality education (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all); Gender equality (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls); Clean water and sanitation (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) and Affordable and clean energy (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all).

At a meeting of the Department’s Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, held recently, the Centre Coordinator who also doubles as the Head of the Department of Mass Communication of the Polytechnic, Mr. Wole Alawode, pointed out that the fulcrum of the Centre’s operations would be on a 3-point objective of Advocacy; Research Link and Monitoring.
The Coordinator, who hinted about competent personnel designated to steer the affairs of the Centre, added that the Centre would also provide an educational platform to students of the Polytechnic on the need to key into the goals as envisioned by the UNGA.
